Alnico Magnet Drivers

The Alnico drivers are the classic Lowther design. Alnico magnets have a very stiff magnetic field, allowing a great deal of information to be transmitted through to the cone. They have a warmer sound, with more harmonic development than the other magnets.

The PM2A has been in production (with various improvements) for over 50 years. Most consider it the ideal driver for use in a back loaded horn, such as the Medallion.

Shown on the right is the PM4A. This is the most powerful magnet of any Lowther. The magnet strength creates a rising high end, which makes it perfect for use in a front horn where the high frequencies are normally attenuated.

A PM5 lies between the PM4A and the PM2A in terms of its magnetic strength, and its sound.

While having the smallest magnet of the Alnico series, the PM6A represents an outstanding value. The Alnico sound, with slightly less efficiency. The higher Q makes it ideal for use in a Voigt Pipe, back loaded horns, or open baffles. A classic and best seller.

The PM7A uses the same magnet as the PM6A, but a permendur pole piece which increases the efficiency of the magnet to a point similar to the PM2A. Almost all of the sound quality of the PM2A in a smaller package.

There are two 5" units with Alnico magnets. The A45 uses the same magnet structure as the PM6A, and the A55 uses the same magnet structure as the PM7A.
